Nacido en Guangzhou, Simon emigró con su familia a Nueva Zelanda cuando era niño. Trabajó como guionista de documentales para la televisión antes de regresar a China, donde ejerció durante varios años como crítico de cine en Time Out Beijing. Actualmente reside en París y su primer cortometraje es Coiffeur.
